A 7.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Kamchatka, with its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean 108 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, has caused significant concern among residents of the region.
Tremors were recorded in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, as well as in the Yelizovsky and Ust-Kamchatsky regions, where seismic activity was felt especially strongly.
This earthquake was not ordinary, but caused eruptions of the Shiveluch volcano, one of the most powerful and active volcanoes on the peninsula.
A powerful column of ash rose to a height of 8 kilometers. Two hours later a new eruption followed to a height of 4.5 kilometers. The ash plume reached a distance of 492 km in 18 hours.
Ash can pose a threat to human and animal health, as well as to aviation. A red alert for aviation has been announced.
The repeated eruption attracted the attention of experts, showing the high activity of the volcano and its potential danger. The activity of the Shiveluch may persist for an indefinite time, and new ash emissions are not excluded.
